From The Principal

Dear Families,

This week we celebrate World Teacher's Day across Queensland. It is a time where we recognise the true gift of the adults that work in our school communities and the way in which they inspire, nurture and share in the learning journey of the students each day.

I believe it is true for many people that they become teachers so that they can make a difference in someone's life. This level of generosity and personal courage is reflected in the history of the teachers that have been part of the history of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School.

We invite you all to reflect on the teachers of our school this week and ask Jesus, the teacher who will model ourselves on, to bless them and guide them.

Thank you to all families, students and community members who have recently participated in the school uniform survey. We thank all members of the working parties who have been actively involved this year.

We will be announcing the results next Monday on assembly and throughout the school community. This process has reminded us of the significance of our Catholic identity, how we are unique as a school and what is important to us. We are confident that the new uniform will reflect this as we participate in the wider community.

As part of our continued growth, we would like to invite new families to our school over the last twelve months to offer feedback on ways that we can improve our support in the transition of families to our school community and the Torres Straits. For many this transition can be quite challenging and we would like to provide as high a level of support both at school level and community level as we can. Please feel free to contact me on scounty@cns.catholic.edu.au if you have any thoughts. New parents to our school community will be receiving a letter next week.

Building Update No1

Next Tuesday, the building programme to renovate the Sacred Heart Mission Hall will commence. This will impact on students who either travel by bus or are picked up or dropped off on the lower level.

The construction site will be clearly sectioned off from public access. All staff and students are to use the stair case that is in front of the school to walk through the church gates on Douglas Street. Children travelling by bus can then walk along the front of the fence line to the bus.

Many thanks for bringing this to your child's attention if this is relevant to their journey to school.

Take care and have a great weekend. We hope to see you all at the fete tonight, enjoying in the celebration of the Sacred Heart Mission.

APRE News

As a Catholic School we believe in educating the whole child and a big part of that is the development of values, attitude and character. As our students actively participate in prayer, mass, liturgies and the Religious Life of the School they are supported and guided as they develop on their own journey. October is the month of the Holy Rosary, this entire month is dedicated to the Rosary. The month of October is a good time to commit to praying the Rosary every day. The Rosary will bring great peace and holiness to your life.

Our Parish commenced a Novena on Saturday 22/10/16 that will run for 10 successive days at 7pm at the Sacred Heart Church. A novena is a devotion consisting of prayer said on successive days, asking to obtain special graces. All are welcome to attend.

Just a reminder that Thanksgiving Mass and Carols Under the Stars will be held on Wednesday the 16th of November. Mass will start at 5:30pm. After mass the Carols will be held up in the school grounds. We will be selling burgers, sausages in bread, drinks, and glow in the dark items. All proceeds will go to Fiji.

Graduation Mass will be held on Thursday the 24th of November at 9am.

Year 5 & 6 News

Hi everyone I'm sure you are finding that this term is rushing by. We now only have four weeks left to finish off the year. I can't believe how fast it has gone and how quickly the end of term will be upon us.

May I ask you a question?

We have been very busy in maths lessons so far this term and the students have been given an assignment to complete. For their assignments, they are required to decide on a topic, create some questions and then survey their classmates to generate some data. They will then create graphs of their data and write a short report. The report then has to be presented to the class.

I have designed this assignment to be quite similar to the sort of work our current year 6 students will be required to do in high school next year, so I hope they will be keen to do well. Speaking of which, I have also included a self-assessment rubric on the back of the assignment which spells out quite clearly what the students need to do in order to achieve a high or very high grade. If they can tick off all the very high achievement boxes for each part of their assignment, they will have a great assignment to hand in. Looking at some of the topics I have read so far, I'm sure there will be a lot of interesting data generated.

The Day the Crayons Quit?

If you haven't seen the pictures, I'm sure you have heard about the wonderful costumes all the teachers were wearing on Monday for Book Week. Yes, I really did dress up as a red crayon! I'd love to take credit for our outfits but I'm afraid most of the kudos must go to Miss Emma, who came up with the idea and coordinated things for us all. I know I certainly wouldn't have got it all organised without her very welcome assistance. If you haven't read the book which inspired our costumes, I hope you get the opportunity to do so as it's a creative little book.

Let's Graduate

With the end of the year comes Graduation and it will be on us almost before we know it. Our Graduation Committee has been meeting regularly to get things in order for the big day but I'm sure we could always use more assistance for this wonderful event in your child's life. If you would like to be involved, please just let me know.

Ukulele Club Concert

Dear Parents and Carers of Ukulele Students,

After our very successful Ukulele lessons during the past three weeks it will be sad to have finished up on Wednesday.

The Ukulele students would like to let you know that we will put on a school performance of our skills/pieces learnt at next Monday's assembly (31st/10/16) at 8.45am in the school undercover area. This should only take approximately 10 minutes and will give a showcase of what skills they have taken on and what their practice has achieved.

It would be great if you could be there.

It would also boost their fluency and confidence if they could play for you at home and show you their chords and songs. Encouragement of this kind is just what young musicians need.

Thanks you again for being a part of this opportunity for your child at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

I can be contacted at the school should you have any further inquiries.

Nauma and Baby Ella

In Literacy, we have had some great presentations delivered to the class. We have been concentrating on our body language and eye contact, as well as speaking with natural rhythm at an appropriate volume. We have some very talented public speakers in Grade 2/3.

In Maths, we have been exploring multiplication strategies and measuring weight. We explored how many pieces of different types of fruit it would take to make a kilogram. We all had a great time eating out Maths work when we were done!

Well done to all who dressed up for the Book Fair Parade. It's always great to see so much creativity.

Prep & Year 1 News

Hi everyone,

We have had a busy few weeks in the Prep/Year 1 class.

I would like to congratulate the award winners so far this term - Hannah, Xander, Chase, William, Sangan and Xavier. These students have been demonstrating the 5 keys to success - well done!

Here is an outline of what we have been learning in class.

In maths we are learning:

  • 3D shapes and objects in our environment
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Collecting data and drawing graphs to represent our data
  • Positional terms
  • Following directions
  • Place value
  • Australian coins
  • Interpreting maps
  • Sharing

In English we are learning:

  • Text decoding strategies
  • Reading comprehension strategies
  • Poems and folktales
  • Verbs and adverbs
  • Fiction and non-fiction books

In science we are learning about our constantly changing world. We have begun to investigate how the sun rises and sets, the sky changes, and the landscape and environment changes over time.

In Religion we are learning about the different types of celebrations we have at Church and why the Church is a special place for these celebrations. This leads us into the special celebration of Christmas - when Jesus was born.

In history we are learning about roles and responsibilities in our families, and how these have changed over time. We have been comparing and contrasting how roles and responsibilities have changed and stayed the same over time, and predict what may happen in the future.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Have a fantastic weekend!

'Day for Daniel'

'Day for Daniel' is a National Day of Action to raise awareness about child safety and protection. Parents, carers and guardians are asked to start a conversation about personal safety in the real world and in an online environment.

Wear Red and Educate is the theme of 'Day for Daniel' as we strive to have schools, kindergartens, businesses and community groups across Australia take action and conduct child safety activities in their local communities to help in 'Keeping Kids Safe'.

The objectives of 'Day for Daniel' are:

  • To raise awareness about child safety and protection and to promote a safer community for children.
  • To educate children regarding their personal safety and empower them to RECOGNISE, REACT and REPORT.
  • To provide FREE safety and educational material.
  • To honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe.

'Day for Daniel' is an opportunity for Australians to make a statement that crimes against children are not acceptable in modern Australia. It aims to help empower our children to RECOGNISE, REACT and REPORT if they feel something is not right.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School wishes to show our support to this worthy cause by wearing Red on Friday 28th October in remembrance of young Daniel Morcombe and in support of his family.
