Principal’s News
The end of term has come and next stage is the return to school on the 10th of July. The end of term marks 4 weeks that I have been back.
The wind could take a break.
However, there are many positives that have happened in the last month. Our school is much tidier with the initial work of Rae and Geoff and now with the great effort of the St. Mary’s crew it has continued. Trees have been pruned, gardens cleaned up and litter removed. I wish that they could stay on. The students have been wonderful in the classrooms. Deb and Col have been marvellous in the gardens and with touch football for the students. The basketball court area has been cleaned of sensitive weed and will be used next term for play and competitions.
Our students have adjusted well to my expectations and the Monday morning assembly is an example of that. Although, the dog that sang during our last assembly was a welcome humorous distraction. The Choir has been a highlight with their concerts on Hammond and here. Our community should be proud of them and as I type this news has come through that they placed 2nd in Island Dancing.
Next term we will work on the 3 respects: Ourselves, others and property. We will underpin that will those basic characteristics of presence, simplicity, family, love of work and the teachings of Mary. When we get that right the culture of the school will flourish.
We are developing our teaching resources with deliveries of art supplies for all grades and microscopes for science classes. Teachers will receive new laptops that will enable them run a range of programmes with better speed and access. The ones they have now will be used by students to learn programming. An order of chrome books is on its way.
Next term staff will be involved with Mark Davidson and he will be working on how to develop and maintain relationship in schools.
It will be a packed term with the athletics carnival, parent teacher meeting and other activities. We will also welcome Stephen Sedran to our staff for Year 2/3. Stephen likes his rugby league and been involved in coaching and organisation for a number of years. We hope his stay will be lengthy.
I would like to thank the community of OLSH and the wider community for the welcome Santina and I have received. Even down to the nickname of Pawpaw that I had here many years ago.
We wish you the best for the holidays and a safe return.
In the way of Mary

I would like to thank all the children, parents and staff at OLSH Thursday Island. You are a wonderful school and it's been a privilege to work up here. T.I is a very special part of the world. Esso from my heart. I'll be eating the fruit of the wongai tree and we all know what that means. YAWO

Year 1 Class News
Year 1 have had a great term and Semester which has seen a big improvement in their Reading levels, Handwriting skills, Spelling ability and Math ability just to name a few. They are all working towards becoming responsible, independent learners and some of them are already showing positive signs in regard to this.
They all had such a wonderful and exciting day for their Under 8's day, and their Class Dojo party on the last day was another enjoyable event on their calendar. They may be ready for a rest now!
Thanks so much to all of the parents, teachers and volunteers who helped make the Under 8's day such a big success, the shirts look really nice too!
Thanks also to all of the parents too for your support with the home reading program, it has made such a big difference to the children's ability to read and therefore to learn. Thanks to those too who came along to the Dojo Party today also, which was a fun way to end the term.
Last, but not least is a Big thank-you to Mrs Hogan, who the children dearly miss, and to Miss Nadine, who helps the students every day and who is an integral part of the Year 1 classroom.
We are lucky to have such a nice bunch of kids in the Year 1 class and hope that they all have an enjoyable and safe holidays with their families and friends.

Choir News
After all the preparations, fundraising and adventures to take the choir to the Cairns Eisteddfod-We Made IT!!!
The OLSH choir performed at 4 different schools/venues and competed in four sections of the choral part of this year’s Eisteddfod. We received a medal and placing for each section we entered which are on display in the front office. We also received the Adjudicator’s Encouragement Trophy out of all the primary school choirs.
Our trip was a huge success mostly because of all our wonderful staff & choir ctudent and supporters. The choir students were very well behaved in Cairns and rose to all the challenges at every venue they visited. Thanks to everyone who made our trip such a smooth running event. In the first newsletter back next term we will present a run down of the whole trip and all who helped and contributed to its success. Check out the Torres News in the next few weeks also for our choir stars and their feature.
