Principal’s News

Welcome back to the final term of 2017. It will go quickly as our final day for the year is the 24th of November.

While it is good to be back I would ask for prayers for Deb Calder, our Learning Support Teacher, as her mother is gravely ill in hospital in Melbourne. Deb has flown to Melbourne to be with her.

The process to appoint a Principal for 2018 is under way with an interview being held this Thursday on TI. Marita Sagigi will the school representative on the panel. The Director of Catholic Education, Bill Dixon will be part of the interviewing panel.

There are a number of events coming up that will not match the 2017 calendar given out to parents.

The Pupil Free Day is next Monday the 16th only. Tuesday will be a usual school day.

The school has arranged for staff to go to Cairns for Consistency of Teacher Judgement Meetings. We have arranged it so we are able to open the school on Tuesday rather than have it shut for 2 days like last year.

Prep information sessions will be on the 18th and 25th. Please see Flyer in this newsletter.

Advertising will go into the Torres News and flyers to kindergartens in town. Enrolment applications in other grades for 2018 have been quite strong indicating a good increase in numbers next year. If you know parents with possible Prep students please advise them to pick up an enrolment form from the school office asap.

There will be 3 Prep induction sessions for new students on Thursday 2nd, 9th, and 16th of November from 9.00 to 10.30am

The Parish Fete is Friday the 27th.

The Parish fete convenor, Marita Sagigi (Phone number 0447811204) is looking for donations of

  • Cakes, slices and biscuits for the stall in the week leading up to the fete.
  • Jars filled with children things like pencils, small toys, cards and other things for a lucky dip stall
  • Help on the night please phone Marita on the above phone number.

Student Matters

This week Cape create ran workshops with student to look at how to decrease pollution and to recycle waste. Part of the activity was to redo our school sign using plastic waste. It will be back up soon.

This Friday afternoon we start the inter school sport programme put together by Mr Worland with touch, basketball and netball being played. Our thanks go to the staff at Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Mudh for their help to get this started. We will look to build on relationships with the other local primary school in the future.

Next Friday is OLSH factor our talent show. More details out by skoolbag.

School Matters

The builder for the building works for Hammond has been appointed with construction to commence later this year.

The school has been able to access extra funding of $30000 to resource our Learning Support resources. The money will be used to provide remedial and extension resources for students. These resources hopefully will all be in the school for the start of next year. Deb has a list and we now will do the ordering.

The generosity of the P and F will see 3 new house marquees and another set of Chrome books. Next years budget will start the replacement of aging digital equipment in classes.

A new phone system for both campuses has been ordered and is expected to be installed this year.

Yours in the work of Mary

Principal

APFL News

October is the month of the Holy Rosary. Throughout this month, students will be learning and saying the Rosary in class with their teachers. They have all been given Rosaries through a donation to our school. The Rosary is significant in our Catholic faith, even more so that we are an “Our Lady of the Sacred Heart” school.

The Sacramental Program for 2017 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School has been placed on hold. The program will recommence in 2018 and take place every second year thereafter. We appreciate the great support from parents and carers for this program. Early in 2018, you will receive further details concerning entry into this program.

Over terms three and four, we have placed great focus on wellbeing within our school. We have developed a Diverse Learning Team that has worked immensely in providing pastoral care and support to students in need. It is our priority to ensure that there exists no barriers to education for any student. I reiterate, therefore, that the purpose of a meaningful Catholic education transcends simply delivering the curriculum. We aim to encourage the personal growth of all our learners, regardless of who they are and what their needs might be. In doing so, our partnership with community, parents and carers is imperative. Your support with this has been greatly appreciated!

Year 4/5 Class News

Welcome back to Term 4. Congratulations to Chrissy and Beka who were our week 1 SEL award recipients! We have been busy engaging in all areas of learning and have enjoyed partaking in our science experiment about how light travels and our Cape Create session; transforming rubbish into art and sculptures.

Eso and kind regards,
Yours in Education, Briohny Jones

Year 2/3 Class News

Dear Parents

Welcome back to another fantastic term of learning at OLSH. What a busy time we have already had. We jumped right into assessment and have been busily working on our history, technology, English and geography assessment pieces. The students have been responding well and we have been doing a great job.

I would like to thank the parents who have been coming in to assist with reading groups. Your assistance has been invaluable and has lifted our reading groups to another level.

Additionally, students participated in the Cape Create in the Torres Straits program during week 2 and learnt about the importance of putting rubbish in the right bins so we can protect our reef. They made sharks and jelly fish out of recycled material and learnt how plastic bags harm marine life.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will continue with assessment so it is very important that all students keep on coming to school every day to get the best marks that they can get.

Until next time, yours in education.

Mr Sedran

Firstly I would like to congratulation to our last week Social and Emotional Learning award winner. The students received their awards for their confidence, and persistence in the first week of term 4. Some of our parents also received a participation certificate from the Triple Parenting Program which took place in term 3.

The Staff and students of the Hammond Island Campus would like to say a big thank you to our Hammond Island mums, dads, Aka’s and Athe’s, aunts and uncles who have worked continuously supporting and guiding with the Hammond Island students and staff in preparation for our NAIDOC week performance last term.

As we head into our last term for 2017 we prepare our students for the next school journey into 2018.

This term we will continue to work on our curriculum in the areas of Religion, English, Mathematics, Science, Hass (Geography/History), The Arts, Technology, Social and Emotional Learning and Health and Physical Education. In religion the students will be learning to say the rosary in class then in week 3 we will be going to the grotto to say our rosary as a whole class. Please feel free to join us. We will be forwarding an overview to parents with the units that will be covered this term. Once again you are all welcome to catch up or just have a yarn and a cuppa at school.

Hammond Pre-Prep News

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Yes, we had a wonderful time to end of term 3 with our NAIDOC Celebrations. A big thank you is well deserved to our parents, community member and elders who have taught the students, school supporters and teachers the cultural island songs and dances. Welcome back to all pre-preps to our last term for this year. We would like to finish off our early learning journey with excitement, exploration, discovery and most of all lots of FUN!!!

Indigenous Knowledge Centre is continuing every Tuesdays with Ms Camilla who has our activities ready for our visits. She is a Super reader when tells us stories. We enjoy her hospitality during our stay.

Our theme for this term is “MY favourite Hero! All children are happy to share who their favourite heroes are by looking onto our curtain fabric for ideas. We love to dress up in our outfit and look cool!

Tracing our names is the first activity we will complete on our entry inside our classroom then select a few different activities available until the bell goes to start our daily lesson. Brushing our teeth after the roll is very important for us in promoting a healthy body and lifestyle. We all LOVE doing this every week!

We are learning:

  • Maths: Counting, identifying, ordering, corresponding and counting our ten coloured turtles plus writing our numbers 1 – 10 and cutting out and identifying the numbers from magazines.
  • Literacy: naming the different parts of a book, where a book starts and ends, how to read from left to right of a story and repeating the beginning sounds of the words. Clapping and counting the syllables in our names. Who has the most or least syllables. Who has the most number of letters in their name? Singing and using puppets to Nursery Rhymes and creating craft work for the Fairy Tales.
  • SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Confidence and Resilience; being confident by applying knowledgeable and to finish off a set activity before moving onto another, bouncing back and cooperating as a class member.
  • Science: Watching our Seeds grow. What do they need. How to take care of them. (We will start in week 2) Keeping Healthy: What foods are god and not so good for our bodies.
  • Religion: Why do we celebrate Christmas?

Let our learning environment be entertaining and joyful.

Ms Dorothy and Mrs Ball

Welfare Officer News

Welcome back! Term 4 is already shaping up to be very busy and will no doubt go rather quickly.

October is Mental Health Awareness month which serves to promote the importance of early intervention practices for positive mental health and wellbeing and reduce the stigma associated with mental health. The awareness campaign is held annually in October to coincide with the World Health Organisation’s recognition of World Mental Health Day which is celebrated on the 10th of October.

Some interesting facts in relation to Mental Health and Wellbeing:

  • 14% of 4-17 year olds are experiencing a mental health or behavioural problem every year on average (boys slightly higher rates than girls)
  • with 50% developing a mental health issue before the age of 15 prevention and early intervention is the key
  • Only 25% received professional healthcare help in the last year

(Source: http://mhsa.aihw.gov.au/ accessed 28/08/17 via Aftercare information)

A great website to access for information and support services for Mental Health and Wellbeing is at the link below. This website not only acts as a source of information but it also provides direct links to websites, support agencies and apps that can be downloaded onto your electronic devices.

http://www.qldmentalhealthweek.org.au

To continue with awareness this month, Aftercare have invited students from OLSH to participate in colouring competition to celebrate and raise awareness for Mental Health and Wellbeing. Students who wish to participate are encouraged to collect a colouring in page from me. There are book voucher prizes to be won. Information for the competition can be found on the poster located on the student Welfare Officer notice board.

I have also created a Wellbeing Wall in our school near the grade 1 classroom to inspire kindness and resilience through motivational quotes. Our Kindness Ambassadors will be sharing messages of kindness here also.

Additionally, if parents would like to connect to our school based Psychologist and Counsellor Mia Lumley there is information available in the front office in relation to the referral pathway.

ALTERNATE ACTIVITIES

  • Drama games – the students participating in drama games have some elements of drama through play based activities. We have decided to incorporate this into a performance for the end of the year. We will be working on a poem titled “Desmond the Christmas Fairy”… we are sure it will be a very entertaining piece!
  • Story time – We recently read the book “How to catch a falling star” by Heidi and Daniel Howarth. This is a beautifully illustrated book that has a strong theme of friendship. Students that participated where from grade 1 – 4 and after reading the book and discussing the theme we spoke about what makes a good friend
  • Community Service – together with the students we have decided that the area of the school that we would like to work on is the entrance garden next to the under-covered area and the ramp leading to the office. The students would like to work on making this garden area lush and inviting. If there are any parents who would like to assist us we would really appreciate it. Additionally, we are looking for low maintenance plants and soil/mulch for this area. The students would also like to support our Wellbeing focus at our school by incorporating painted stones from each student in this area. If you would like to help with this project please contact me via email on kdunn@cns.catholic.edu.au or leave a message at the front office
