Principal’s News
Majella Lynch-Harlow, the Principal for 2108 visited last week and was able to meet plenty of people at the fete. She also brought a gift for her niece. Her husband Phillip’s father was born on Erub and he is looking forward to meeting his extended family members.
I had the opportunity to visit Bampfield Beach last weekend and see the changes to the camp. The original camp was set up in 1977 by the then “Thursday island State School” and each grade from Year 4 to 7 would spend a week at the camp. There would be plenty of people on TI who would remember those camps in a time before Workplace, Health and Safety assessments. Games like lantern stalk at night, golf on the beach and the walk up to waterfall pool were highlights. The tree roots claimed may shins at night but no complaints were heard.
The camp today is a tribute to the efforts of Tim Hillier, Tagai State College students and everybody else involved over the years. If it can be arranged this is where our school should have its Leadership camp next year.
I wonder how many people can remember Dougy’s green boat that took the kids out and how fast it wasn’t? (Are we there yet?)
Student Matters
Enrolments for 2018 show significant growth especially in Grade 2 to 6. The final breakdown for 2018 will be sent out prior to the end of the year. If you know of people considering enrolment at OLSH please ask them to do it asap or if you are leaving, please contact the school. The numbers as they are now will mean more single grade classes next year.
The Inter School Sport Programme with Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Mudh has been going for 3 weeks and we won our first touch game. Deba scored the try. Basketball and Netball have been playing as mixed teams. Our next step may be to look at games with Horn Island. It obviously a time the students look forward to as there is no trouble to get them to meet and be ready to go.
Deb McGuiness our travelling librarian has been with us for two weeks and will be back in Week 7 and 8. She has shown staff and students that librarians are not just books as she is very much a computer and gidgit person. Deb’s Bebot robots were a hit in class.
Week 5 we have the CES Speech and Occupational Therapists visiting to work with staff and students. Hearing tests have been undertaken at the school and in Week 6 the dentist is scheduled to visit Hammond Island on Thursday and Friday.
School Matters
The builder Hammond Island school works are scheduled to be done over the holidays. Plans of those renovations are on display at the school.
We apologise to the Year 4/5 class as their air conditioner has broken down. We are waiting for parts to get us through the year with a new replacement air conditioner i planned to be installed over the break.
With P and F assistance and other funding the school will buy a class set of Chrome books and computer equipment for remedial and extension learning.
Our school budget for 2018 is ready to go to the Finance committee on the 16th. Part of the budget is a commitment of funds to an upgrade of digital whiteboards, TVs and class furniture. Some of this will be purchased this year.
Community Matters
The Parish Fete ran with precision thanks to Marita, Juanita and all of the helpers. It was organised, arranged and catered for in a typically TI way. It just got done and cleaned up with a minimum of fuss. Thanks to all who helped.
In Week 7 the school will running a Wellbeing Week with a parent night on the 15th November. Details will be sent out before the night.
Yours in the work of Mary

News from the Assistant Principal
The Parish Fete was a great success! Our biggest thanks to all the many people who helped out. Marita Sagigi did a wonderful job in coordinating the event on the day.
This week our school and the parish community will participate in masses for All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. All are invited to attend the All Saints’ Day Mass on the 1stat 9.30am and the All Souls Day Mass in the Cemetery at 6.00pm On Thursday the 2nd.
All Saints’ Day commemorates the powerful and divine connections we have with those in heaven. It leads us to the point that we are all the apostles of Jesus, just as with all the Saints. Our connections to God through Christ are deeply personal. Yet it is in being apostles to Christ that we are impelled to live out the teachings of love and compassion for all under the most fundamental of all teachings; to love God with all our hearts and souls.

Administration News
Term 4 Fees have been issued to families and payment reminders have gone out last week. Please ensure your school fees have been paid to the school office prior to the end of the term.
School will end at 12noon on Friday 24th November 2017. Please make arrangements for your child or children to be collected at 12 noon as there will not be any supervision of children after this time due to the closure of the school.
The office will be CLOSED from 12noon on Friday 24th November as well but will be open for general business from Monday 27th November until Thursday 30th November 2017.
We have still had a number of children come to school with uncovered open wounds or infected sores. Please make sure sores or wounds are covered with appropriate dressings prior to arriving at school. Our little school does not have the capabilities or facilities to conduct wound dressings or infection control.
School hours are:
8.30 – 10.30 1st Session
10.30 – 11.05 1st Break
11.05 – 1.10 2nd Session
1.10 – 1.40 2nd Break
1.40 – 3.00 3rd Session
Children who arrive at school after 8.30am in the morning will need to come into the school office to get a late slip to hand to their Teacher, this will ensure they are marked Present on the roll by the office. If a late slip is not collected the child may be marked absent on the roll and an automatic sms will be sent out advising you that your child is absent from school. Please remind your child to collect a late slip from the office when they are late to school.
Can parents/caregivers please notify the school office of your child’s absence as soon as possible and preferably in the mornings prior to roll marking, whether it be due to illness, appointments, family or personal issues or planned trips off the island. This will aid the school with audit reports regarding unexplained absences.
Enrolments for 2018 are available in all Year levels from Prep to Year 6. Please go to the OLSH website below to download the enrolment package on-line or come into the office and ask for a pack.
